Just saw this Soviet-Georgian film, The Legend of the Suram Fortress - absolutely amazing. My friend rented it at random, but it was totally brilliant.
Came across as a mix of Kurosawa’s Ran/Kagemusha, Frantisek Vlacil’s Marketa Lazarova, Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev, and pretty much anything by Jodorowsky, filtered into an gloriously inpenetrable narrative, and full of baffling - but evocative and beautiful - folkloric pageantry and loaded tableaux.
I love it when amazing things come out of nowhere. This one’s a keeper.
