Fitzcarraldo Loved this. The unusual milieu – chaotic, sweaty colonial decadence in 1900s Peru, and the westernisation of South American Indians – is interesting in itself, but I love how beautiful it is, but filmed with a very mobile camera, that makes things seem very real and almost documentary-like. There are so many arresting images, like trees being felled into the river, insects round lights, and the band on the roof of the steamer. It’s one of those stories which you can’t quite place where it came from (a man obsessed with building an opera house in the jungle?), but is completely fascinating.
